Large bronze statue of Primo Carnera

Primo Carnera was an Italian boxer, fighter and actor; he was naturalised as an American citizen in 1953.

Because of his imposing built he was nicknamed “the Ambling Alp” and he was the first Italian athlete to win the World Boxing Championship by dethroning Jack Sharkey in the heavyweight category on 29 June 1933. He lost his belt on 14 June 1934, when he was defeated by Max Baer. At the height of his career, he became known for supporting Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime, for which he acted as an instrument of propaganda, until he retired from the international boxing scene during the second half of the thirties.
